A traditional network has an internet connection wired to a network box. Cables from this box are run to the other computers within the network. All information (including internet connection) travels through these cables (Ethernet).
Wireless networks work on a similar basis, broadcasting a radio (wireless) signal, instead of sending the signal down a cable.
Internet comes in from the box on the wall. It is wired to a wireless ‘transmitter’ (access point/router). Connection to the other computers is wireless and can be picked up by anyone, anywhere within range.
Advantages of this system are that no cables are required, with significant cost savings, plus avoiding the hassle/disruption of installation or adding new data-ports.
Zonerider sits on these networks and controls the connection to users who have not yet purchased access, thus creating a Hotspot.
Additionally Zonerider can offer free access - with no login page - to Staff, Friends, family, or non screen based devices like printers, servers. cameras, and terminals. Often described as a White List, this is done by simply hi-lighting the user session when they come on, and clicking "Add to free local access"
Setting up wireless coverage effectively is a simple process, but will need to allow for the size, shape and style of your location. Technology in this area is improving all the time. Currently a MIMO (pre-N) router provides a wide wireless range. This is widely available and quite affordable Alternatively, a carrier (industrial) grade router, with increased wireless range is more expensive but offers features to scale up the network such as repeating, power over ethernet and high gain antennea.
If your building extends beyond the range of a single router, we suggest the positioning of additional wired access points in suitable locations from which further routers can be placed to ensure full coverage
